These two-tier wedding cake ideas range from rustic to elegant, and would fit into any small, intimate wedding reception at home or at an intimate restaurant. A simple 2-tier cake can also be combined with other small cakes on a dessert table to create a group of desserts that guests can enjoy if you’re having a larger reception.

Isomalt decorations.

isomalt pink and white wedding cake

This small cake is completely plain on the fondant tiers, and they have feathery isomalt details that are made in pink and clear sugar, then painted with gold luster dust. This kind of design is pretty easy to do if you’re familiar with isomalt work, but you do need to have that experience to make it work. You could make a version of it using gumpaste, but it won’t be transparent.

Iridescent feathers.

This black fondant feather cake is covered with molded feathers, then brushed with a combination of blue, green, and purple luster dusts. It’s time-consuming because you have to mold each feather individually, but it’s easy even for a beginner as far as skill level goes.

Black and red roses.

This black cake can be done in fondant or buttercream (fondant is easier), then the red flowers and ribbon details were added. With dark colors like this you need to be very careful to try to minimize the food coloring, so use this technique to cover them: Dark buttercream hack.

Purple isomalt decorations.

This cake was designed based on the wedding dress, which had pleated ruffles and tiny flowers all over it. This kind of thing is pretty easy to do because it’s just making the decorations and placing it on a plain cake.

Candy clay covered cake.

Chocolate clay in different colors can be mashed together and rolled out to make a marbled look. You can also do this with fondant if you’re not comfortable with candy clay.

Fondant applique cake.

This double-barrel cake is technically three tiers, but since the profile is two tiers I’m including it. This is basically pieces of fondant cut out, applied to the cake, then overpiped with royal icing.

I’m adding this cake table to show how a small cake arrangement can be set up. When I did these kinds of cakes I usually did a different flavor on each cake so that the guest could have a choice of flavors.

This set of cakes had a buttercream rosette and a naked cake on the single-tier cakes, and a semi-naked cake for the two-tier cake in the center. It’s a cute rustic arrangement that was set up at an intimate wedding reception at a local restaurant.
