First Trip Around The Sun and Two The Moon Birthday Themes

The First Trip Around the Sun and Two the Moon party themes have gained in popularity in recent years, and I’ve seen some really cute parties featuring planets, moons, and stars.

There are plenty of wafer paper and fondant sets of these types of decorations online, and I have some coordinating party supplies that you can get to go with them.

First Trip Around The Sun Birthday Cake Toppers

These planets cake and cupcake topper sets can be attached to the cake simply by pressing the precut planets and stars onto the iced cake if they’re made from wafer paper. If they’re fondant or gumpaste you can stick them on using a little icing as edible glue.

If the icing is crusted over, which happens when the icing crystallizes, it might be hard to get it to stick, If you have some extra icing you can use that as an edible glue, or a dot of corn syrup can be used to attach the shapes to the cake.

When I used to sell cake decorations I made these to decorate a planets-themed birthday. I loved seeing the different cake designs that my customers create with these, so I rounded some up to show them off.

Stacey Garcia made this cake with a combination of two sets of purple and blue planets. They’re attached to a round tier that’s covered in buttercream, and you can see that the wafer paper planets are sturdy enough to stand up when they’re extended over the top edge of the cake, and when they’re inserted into the cake on the top.

This is a really cute way to use the planets that I don’t see a lot of people doing, so points for originality!

This cake by Hilary used multiple sets of the wafer paper planets, and stood some of them up on the cake as well as putting some of them flat on the icing.

These cupcakes and cakes that Mari Ann made used multiple sets of the edible planets. Using cupcakes and a smaller smash cake for the cake photos is a good idea to cut down on the time that you’ll need to spend serving cake during the party! (It also saves on plates and forks!)

Two the moon second birthday theme.

two the moon birthday cake

This cake was Kat Darling’s, and was for a second birthday. She’s layered the shapes so that the gold stars are floating on top of the planets, and the green color matches the pale mint icing on the cake.

This is a pretty arrangement, and it shows how a slightly different arrangement can give the cake an entirely different look, even with the same shapes.

Jade Graziano made this grey and silver edible planets cake for another 2nd birthday party. This is a buttercream semi-naked cake, so it’s another idea for a different style. My guess for this one is that she may have used buttercream to attach the planets to the cake, but she may have used a little water to attach the planets to each other.

I like the way that a slightly different icing finish or planet arrangement on the cakes gives them all a different “mood” as far as the style goes. Changing the icing style or color is a simple way to match the theme of the party, and it gives all of these cakes a totally different aesthetic.

Caitlin Zumbrunn made this one for a second birthday party and arranged the planets a little farther apart so that they cover more of the surface of the cake.

This is a looser arrangement, and I like the way the stars scatter over the surface and add some movement to the design.

This last cake is a dark blue galaxy design, and shows how the set can take on a different look when the icing is a different color. This is Mania Arakelian’s cake, and it looks like it had a mirror glaze finish based on the shine on the cake.

The darker color and the planets inserted upright into the top of the tier give this one a completely different appearance than the other styles, and it would be good for both younger kids and older ones. This is a really nice example of how to design the planets in a different way.
