How To Make Super Simple Buttercream Wreath Cupcakes

These super simple Christmas wreath cupcakes are fun and fast to make, and don’t take special piping skills. They’re a no-fuss Christmas cupcake decorating design that you can make for a holiday party using buttercream frosting and either home baked or store-bought cupcakes. Make these simple Christmas treats for a school holiday party, an office party, or a dessert buffet. You only need one piping tip, unless you want to make the bow out of fondant or tie one with a piece of licorice instead! These use buttercream and a quick piped bow to make a pretty design that looks great with a bunch of them put together, but are also fast to make for people who are short on time.

Ice the cupcakes flat.

ice the cupcakes flat

First step is to ice some cupcakes with a flat top. You can do home baked or buy them from the grocery store and just use the icing that’s on them to ice them. You basically just want a flat surface to work on, it doesn’t have to be perfect!

Get a discount on food coloring.

If you want to shop on Oasis Supply for Americolor food coloring, you can use my coupon code REMEMBER10 to get a discount on your whole order. I’ve linked to the individual colors on Amazon in the sections below, but this link will take you to a listing on Oasis that has the same colors in a dropdown menu to choose from: Americolor food coloring on Oasis. The price on Oasis might be a little lower than on Amazon, too, even before using the discount code!

Pipe the wreath.

To pipe the wreath, I put dark green icing in a piping bag and cut the tip of the bag off close to the end. You don’t need to use a piping tip for this, but if you want to get really fancy with it, you can use a leaf tip and do individual leaves.

Just wiggle the bag back and forth to make an irregular circle shape that looks like a textured wreath. I did two layers but you could do three if you want a fuller look.

Add candy for color.

I used a box of Nerds for these, but you can use red hots or any kind of shaped sprinkles to decorate the wreaths. There are a lot of Christmas themed sprinkles available that you can use to match a color scheme if you want to.

Sprinkle the candy on the icing to decorate the wreaths. Try not to get any on the white icing in the center, but if you do it’s not a huge deal!

pipe the bow onto the wreath

Using a piping tip #104, or a flat ribbon tip, pipe a bow with the loops at the top of the wreath.

Add the ties on the bow and pipe over the center of the loops with a flat line to make the knot on the bow. You’re done! These are fast to make.

These are cute, and they don’t need to be perfect to look good. If your bows are a little wonky, that’s fine! If you’re really scared of making a piped bow, though, you can take a piece of the pull and peel red licorice and tie them into a bow to use instead. Or make molded bows with red fondant and a bow mold.
