Piped Buttercream Flowers Cake With Purple Borders

This cake had purple and black piped borders, pink-tined icing on the side of the cake, and piped buttercream flowers and leaves on the top of the cake. The color scheme falls into the pastel goth aesthetic, but it would be good for any event where you wanted a darker vibe that’s still romantic and girly.

Piping the borders.

When you’re doing the top borders, start on the outside and work your way in. You can do concentric borders or pie two, then place a third one on top of those.

For this kind of color scheme that’s a little more ombre, you can combine icing colors like I did when I was changing the piping tips because if the colors mix together it won’t matter.

If you’re planning on doing any writing on the top of the cake keep that in mind, since you’ll have to leave enough room and you won’t be able to make the borders as big as you feel like.

Piping buttercream roses on a dowel.

When you pipe buttercream flowers like roses on a piping nail, it’s easy to make them too flat. Using a dowel is a trick that I use to counteract that.

If you pipe the rose on the nail and make it a little taller than you want the final flower to be, it will naturally flatten out when you press up to slide it off of the dowel. I use waxed paper to take them off of the dowels, but you can use one of those little flower scissors kind of tools that people use for icing flowers if you like those. The waxed paper (or parchment) works best, though.

Once you remove the flowers from the dowel you can put them on a cookie sheet to dry out if they’re air-dry buttercream, or put in the freezer or the fridge if they have butter in them. They’ll be easy to transfer to the cake after they set up.

Putting the flowers on the cake.

When the top borders are done, you can add the flowers to the top of the cake and then pipe some leaves in between them to cover up gaps and add to the cake design.

For this cake I used black icing for the leaves, and I piped a couple of new buttercream roses to add to fill out the arrangement.

This design could be done using pastel pink and yellow flowers and borders for a completely different look, it’s a versatile design.
