The Americolor Electric Colors food coloring set has 7 bright colors that will stand out on your cake’s icing. I was impressed with these colors for the most part, and the only one that wasn’t really great was still pretty good! They’d be good to use as general colors to have on hand for different uses since they’re all pretty bright.
I would also suggest these for Spring flower cakes, since the colors were all pretty bright and not muddy at all.
This is what’s included, plus a look at the kinds of colors each one makes.

Method for the food coloring.
The Americolor food colorings come in little dropper bottles. I used about 1/4 cup icing for each test and did 1 drop of color for light, 2 drops for medium, and 3 drops for dark.
The icing was a practice buttercream that was made from shortening and confectioner’s sugar, so it was totally white to begin with. If you’re using butter your icing is going to have a slightly off-white tint, so the colors will be a little different and you might have to adjust them a little.
If you’re using a larger amount of icing, start with a little color and add more as you go. Some of the colors are really strong, so start with less than you think you’ll need and work your way up.
These colors are a lot more concentrated than liquid food coloring, and they give you better colors. Click here to check the difference between these, regular McCormick colors, and natural food colorings.
Electric Red
Americolor Electric Red isn’t really red, it’s more like a reddish orange. I was watching a tv show that had a scene that included red neon lights and this was the color they made! But it’s not a super deep Christmas red, it was like a reddish orange.
If you’re looking for a more true red, get the Red Red or Super Red.
Electric Green
Electric Green was a FANTASTIC color! I really liked this one, but it was definitely more neon than not. It would be perfect for Spring leaves or piping lettuce leaves, or maybe frogs…For things like Christmas trees, it wouldn’t work. But it was a really great color in general.
Electric Purple
Electric Purple was more of a deep lavender, and it was really pretty. I would use this for piping flowers for a Spring garden cake that had things like lilacs or purple daisies.
It wasn’t a scary bright color, either, it was softer than the name would suggest!
Electric Yellow
Electric Yellow gives you an amazingly bright and pure yellow color that isn’t too orange or too green. It would be perfect to have on hand as an all-purpose yellow because it works on its own but would also mix well to make other colors.
The lightest color for this one was still really bright, and I’m really impressed by this one. It would be great for piping flowers.

Electric Pink
Electric Pink was a really nice pink color that wasn’t too crazy, but did give me a decent range of colors. Some of the other Electric colors didn’t change very much as I added more of the food coloring, but you could definitely see a difference between the lightest and darkest of the pink.
This would be good for a basic baby shower cake, but the darker version would work for a hot pink color if you needed that.

Electric Blue
This was a nice bright blue that was very similar to the Americolor Sky Blue. It didn’t take much to get a good, deep color. This would be good to use for a sky blue, or to pipe small filler flowers.

Electric Orange
Electric Orange was definitely bright, but the lightest version shows that you could use it to make a soft orange color if you started with a larger amount of icing. The “electric” part was obvious when you added more of the color, so if you need it to make oranges or orange safety cones on a cake for some weird reason, it would work.

Electric Red Vs. Orange
I did want to show the difference between the Electric Red and Electric Orange, since the red wasn’t as deep as it could have been. They’re pretty similar, but the red has more of a coral tone and the orange is more pure orange.
