Pretty Purple Wedding Cake Ideas

Purple has always been one of the most popular and pretty colors for wedding themes, and I made a lot of purple wedding cakes.

The color purple can be very tricky to work with, so sometimes the decorator will use options for purple accents that won’t fade or turn to blue. These cakes show some ideas for using purple with your wedding cake.

Purple gumpaste roses and fondant borders.

purple roses wedding cake

This cake had purple fondant roses and purple fondant bands at the base of each tier.

I airbrushed the roses so that they would have the color sitting on the surface and not incorporated into the gumpaste, because when it’s mixed in it can sometimes fade out.

When the color sits on the surface of the flowers it’s less likely to fade.

Purple ombre chocolate clay flowers.

purple ombre candy clay wedding cake

This cake was covered with ombre chocolate clay instead of fondant, and the matching flowers were made from modeling chocolate and isomalt centers.

There were also isomalt molded flowers incorporated into the cascade.

The ombre shades of purple in the flower cascade were placed in the opposite arrangement of the color on the cake itself, so that they played off each other.

Purple gumpaste orchids.

rustic icing wedding cake with blue and purple gumpaste orchids

This cake had rustic buttercream and gumpaste orchids in shades of blue and purple.

When you’re including purple into a cake design one of the best ways is to use purple on the accents on the cake instead of coloring the icing.

That’s because icing color can change, but you can make colored flowers and other accents ahead of time and adjust any fading or color change that happens.

Purple ombre exploded flower wedding cake.

ombre purple exploded flower wedding cake

This cake had an ombre exploded (or expanded, whichever you prefer) rose on the front of the cake.

Adding the ombre color put a twist on the basic exploded flower cake, and it was a good way to match the purple color theme without being too much color on the cake.

Purple gumpaste hydrangeas wedding cake.

white fondant draping cake with purple gumpste hydrangeas

This cake with fondant draping featured bunches of gumpaste hydrangeas that have been airbrushed with purple food coloring, then dusted to deepen the purple color.

The pops of color on the white drapes were a nice accent and a good way to add the color to a traditional white wedding cake.

The tiers were alternated fondant ruffles and piped Swiss dots.

Purple gumpaste calla lilies wedding cake.

This cake had a cascade of purple gumpaste calla lilies on tiers that had piped swirls and thin bling wrap borders.

Gumpaste callas are pretty easy to make, and sine they can be made without wires, they’re totally food-safe to use on a wedding cake.

For the details on the bands, I cut out some contrasting flower shapes, then painted over them with opaque edible paint.

Regardless of how you incorporate purple into your wedding cake, it’s a color that appeals to a lot of people, and it’s the basis of a lot of good color schemes for wedding decor.
